Financial Dimensions of War Crimes Investigations

The course is designed to provide specialist knowledge and skills to allow participants to identify, collect and utilise financial evidence as part of a broader investigation into war crimes or human rights abuses. It will be a mixture of presentations and immersive exercises.

The course includes:

  • An introduction to the international legal framework
  • The international financial investigation landscape: international regulation & frameworks; law enforcement structures; international cooperation mechanisms
  • Financial investigation – principles & practice: preparation & planning
  • Using open source intelligence: researching & profiling persons of interest; company and business searching
  • Money laundering: international money movements; correspondent banking; offshore structures
  • Sensitive witnesses/information sources: risk management

The course will involve an immersive exercise based on a realistic scenario designed to develop and test the learning acquired in the course.
