The Analysis Skills course is designed to equip individuals with the skills required to provide analytical support to the investigation of serious violations of international humanitarian, criminal and human rights law. The course follows the model of the ‘intelligence-cycle’, the standard process model used by major Governmental and Inter-Governmental agencies worldwide. It is delivered through a combination of theory presentations and practical exercises performed in groups. A detailed and realistic case scenario is developed during the course. As well as providing the raw-material for the practical exercises, the scenario also exposes students to the diversity of information they are likely to encounter in real-life investigations. Students are also provided with the basics of military and para-military organisation, functioning and action relevant to international crime investigations.

It includes:

  • The concept of intelligence
  • The role of the analyst
  • The intelligence and analysis process
  • The intelligence cycle
  • Direction, including tasking and objective setting;
  • Collection, including collection plans and sources of information
  • Collation, including information management systems
  • Evaluation, including the 4x4 system
  • Analysis, including charting techniques and hypothesis development
  • Dissemination, including oral & written briefings
  • Integration of Sexual and Gender Based Violence into International Crimes Analysis Processes.
  • Aspects of organised crime and financial exploitation of natural resources

Like those who have sent emails already, I too feel honoured to have been part of such a valuable training event and gained a wealth of knowledge from all of your expertise in a variety of areas.

We had a colleague on mission from Geneva a while back, and when they found out I had completed the IICI investigators course they mentioned that it was the ‘gold standard’ of training and that more human rights officers needed to do it. Could not agree more.

The course was definitely an extraordinary experience.

The best thing being by far the team building experience: work with people I had never seen before and that came from different background, put together our expertise and experiences in a constructive way. Each of us brought something to our team and I believe we all learn about the importance of listening to one another and question our ideas. It was like building a picture to which each one of us contributed with an essential detail.
