Bassiouni Tribute

The IICI would like to pay tribute to Professor M. Cherif Bassiouni, influential figure in the field of International Criminal Law and long-standing member of IICI’s Council of Advisers, who died this week. In addition to his academic legal work, Professor Bassiouni led numerous investigations. Amongst many other roles, he chaired the Commission of Experts established by the Security Council to investigate the crimes being committed in the former Yugoslavia which was influential in the subsequent foundation of the ICTY; he chaired the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry; and served as Chair and then member of the UN Commission of Inquiry for Libya. He leaves a strong legacy of academic brilliance and practical leadership, and IICI expresses its appreciation for his support over the years and condolences to his family.
